It is the goal of the IGLOS- project to develop a software platform (terminology management system) on a solid linguistic basis. This software platform is intended to facilitate the development of a consistent, unambiguous and multilingual technical terminology which improves communication in scientific or commercial applications.
An intense examination of different current semiotic theories clearly demonstrated that they do not sufficiently take into consideration domain specific language use. Thus a new semiotic model was needed which makes up the linguistic basis of the IGLOS project. This new model of a linguistic sign is of immense explanatory power for the differences which currently exist between the language use both in different domains and different languages. Using this approach it will be possible to model language in its complete complexity. For this reason a major focus is laid on linguistic relationsÂ? such as different degrees of synonymy, homonymy, overlapping terminology, equivalence , domain specificity, multiple possibilities of translation etc. Since existing terminology management systems are not able to support the modelling of a technical terminology with a sufficient degree of precision an own software platform had to be developed. Currently the new semiotic model is incorporated into an own terminology management system.
Since language interconnects people with various professional backgrounds a multidisciplinary approach is required. Therefore the IGLOS project is characterized by an intense interdisciplinary dialogue of linguists, terminologists, computer scientists, engineers as well as translators and users.
