INTELFRET (Intelligent Freight Train) is an European research project for the advancement of the railway freight traffic. With the collaboration of the biggest railway companies, SNCF and DB AG, and the leading manufacturers of freight traffic vehicles the standards for the freight vehicle of the future are determined. The IfRA participates in this with its experience in the field of economy evaluation, communication systems and coordination with other railway technology developments, especially ERTMS/ETCS. The aim of the project is the development of a three-step communication system on the wagons, the train and from the train to the track. This is then the basis for a standardised, railway operational application as the automatic Zugtaufe, train integrity control and electronic braking control as well as a free communication channel that can be adapted to the respective requirements of the wagon owner and the customer.
